About Alan

Alan Brown’s family moved to New Mexico in 1979, relocating from Dayton, Ohio so his father could work for the Los Alamos National Lab. He attended Los Alamos High School and the University of New Mexico. During his post high school years he worked for several audio/video sales companies. The most notable is West Coast Sound, an iconic New Mexico based company where he spent 7 years in their employ. When West Coast Sound was purchased by another company, Alan left the audio/video business for several years.

Alan Brown workingDuring these years, Alan made several trips to Arizona and became enamored with Phoenix. In 1996 Alan moved to Phoenix, rejoined the audio/video business and became employed by Circuit City’s technical support center in Tempe, Arizona. Answer City gained a reputation as one highest rated consumer technical support call centers in the nation. During his time at Answer City, Alan successfully helped troubleshoot and set up thousands of consumer electronics products. Alan often heard from customers during this time, could someone come to my home, set this device up and show me how to use it? At the height of its popularity, Circuit City decided to end providing quality technical support for their customers. Alan spent the next four years working outside the audio/video industry.

In 2002 Alan rejoined the audio/video industry working for the Sony Corporation of America. Alan worked in the SonyStyle division of Sony, an online store which helped customer’s custom-build Sony VAIO computers and purchase other Sony products. Again, he heard people ask, could someone come to my house, set this device up and show me how to use it?

Over the years Alan pitched the idea of an in-home electronics sales and tech support service. It was turned down by several companies and industry insiders told him the idea would never work. In October of 2003 Alan left Sony and opened his in-home electronics service. He decided on the name “The Hook Up” because he was literally going to hook up people’s equipment.

Over the next decade Alan made The Hook Up a success. He grew a large and incredibly loyal clientele. He sponsored group games for the Arizona Coyotes. He grew his network with the local professional sports teams and gained customers within the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Coyotes organizations. He was featured twice on ABC 15’s Smart Shopper with Daphne Munro. He received many accolades including three best of Phoenix awards, 11 consecutive Angie’s List Super Service Awards and received nearly 200 positive online reviews across various platforms. The Hook Up was a huge success.

Seasonal Phoenix customers began to suggest to Alan that it would be great to have a Hook Up in the other city they lived in. Alan agreed, but how would he choose where the second location would be? Turns out a romance with a former classmate from Los Alamos determined the location, Alan would return to New Mexico after 20 years.

Alan opened The Hook Up Santa Fe in March of 2017. Now in its third year, it is already a success, adding more customers, getting great reviews, continuing the practices that made the Phoenix location such a success. Alan still speaks with customers in Phoenix, helping with tech questions and suggesting products. He provides real time tech support for Jordan Spear who continues to successfully grow the Phoenix location. He is proud to bring his successful service to the state in which he called home for several decades. Alan plans on continuing to grow the Santa Fe location, support the growth of the Phoenix location and since the first expansion has done so well, he plans on bringing The Hook Up to even more cities.
